Orioles’ Colby Rasmus heads to 10-day DL with sore hip

The Baltimore Orioles have placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 10-day disabled list with a hip injury.

He has a strained left hip flexor and is batting .095 with 13 strikeouts in 21 at-bats. Rasmus signed a one-year contract in February.

The move by the Orioles came before Saturday’s game with the New York Yankees and hours after Baltimore beat New York 7-3 on Friday night on Pedro Alvarez’s 14th-inning grand slam.

Baltimore recalled rookie right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis from Triple-A Norfolk. He made 14 relief appearances last year.

A 3-pointer by Forbes and a layup by Ginobili 30 seconds later gave the Spurs an 82-77 lead with 5:23 remaining.

“He did an amazing job,” Ginobili said of Forbes. “Not only to make shots it’s easy to see the 3s or the two big shots he got, but he played very solid defense, he was a pest chasing them around. We really changed the game when he was on the court.”

Manager Buck Showalter said Harvey “provides the only right-handed length that we have at this point.”

Harvey was scheduled to start Monday for Bowie. Since being drafted 22nd overall in 2013, Harvey is 7-8 with a 2.56 ERA in 38 games, all starts.

Bucks: G Malcolm Brogdon (left quad) returned following a 30-game absence. The 2016-17 NBA Rookie of the Year scored two and played 13 minutes, all in the first half.

A game that had the feel of a Milwaukee blowout turned tight after a cold-shooting second quarter for the Bucks. They missed their first 12 shots in the period, with a Bledsoe-to-Middleton layup finally ending the scoreless streak with 5:07 left.

The pace picked up again once facilitators Bledsoe and Middleton (18 points) re-entered the game, with Milwaukee taking a 45-42 lead at halftime.

Vucevic added 10 rebounds to pick up his 29th double-double of the season. … Biyombo was 6 of 7 from the field. … The Bucks with a regular season record of 668-536 in their 30 seasons at the Bradley Center.buccaneers_076

The Shohei Ohtani Experience: Keep track of the Angels phenom’s two-way quest

As a starting pitcher and a designated hitter, Los Angeles Angels rookie Shohei Ohtani is embarking on a two-way journey that no major leaguer has successfully pulled off since Babe Ruth himself. Will Ohtani dominate on the mound and crush at the plate?

Shohei Ohtani is the 3rd player in MLB history to get 2 wins as a pitcher and hit 3 HR in his team’s first 10 games of a season, and he’s the first to do it in the Live-Ball Era (Since 1920) according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Blach avoided further damage by getting Logan Forsythe to hit into an inning-ending double play with runners on first and third.

The Giants threatened in the sixth with back-to-back, one-out singles from pinch-hitter Gorkys Hernandez and Austin Jackson. Joe Panik followed with a sinking line drive to right field that Puig caught on his knees. Hernandez ran on the play either because he lost track of the outs or thought the ball was going to fall. Instead, he was easily doubled off second for the final out of the inning.

“Lamar is a great kid and a great athlete. I know how all the things he’s able do and how he can produce,” Watson said. “He’ll continue to play at a high level and be successful.”

Watson, although not to the same extent as Jackson, went into the draft with some undue concerns about how his athleticism would translate in a pro-style offense. Like he did, Watson thinks Jackson will put those doubters to shame once he gets his chance with the team that wants him most.

“It will be fun to watch him grow in this league, too, doing the same things he did in college,” Watson said. “I know he’s one of the best quarterbacks — if not the best — coming in the draft. For any team that gets him, he’ll have the mind-set to keep improving. There are 32 teams and at least half of them will like Lamar Jackson. He’s going to be fine and can be great wherever he goes.”

Watson found early success as a starter because he had an offensive-minded head coach in Bill O’Brien who could wisely adapt to Watson’s strengths. Even though Watson had to wait a little to be drafted, he can’t imagine playing for any other team.buccaneers_017

Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts suffers left ankle injury after slide into dugout

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts left Sunday’s 8-7 victory over the Rays in the seventh inning after injuring his left ankle while sliding into the Rays’ dugout.

An aggressive forecheck led to Thomas knocking Andrew Peeke off the puck in the right corner. The puck went to Kuhlman and back to Thomas, who banked a shot from near the goal line off Morris and in with 1:21 left in the period.

Oglevie redirected a pass from Cam Morrison for a power-play goal in the second period to get the Irish on the board.

Welcome to 2018. On Monday night in Arizona, Jansen inherited a three-run lead in the ninth inning and after scuffling with a few walks permitted Chris Owings, a career .392 slugger, to mash a shocking, game-tying home run. Jansen finished the inning but it marked the second consecutive game he allowed a home run to, well, someone he should not be allowing home runs to (Joe Panik was the first), and we cannot help but notice he boasts nary a strikeout through two full innings and was seen rubbing his throwing shoulder in the dugout.

Both starters were gone after five innings. Harvey left with the lead after giving up four runs and nine hits, while Washington’s Tanner Roark allowed five runs and five hits. Nine Mets reached base against Roark, all with two outs.

The Nationals took a 2-0 lead in the first when Harper homered down the right field line on a 1-1 fastball.

Now the 26-year-old will start over in Dallas, where rumblings continue about Bryant’s future with the team. For the time being, though, Hurns figures to be competing more with Terrance Williams for targets.

“It’s tough, and it’s a shame,” Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said on Monday. “(Ramirez) worked very, very hard. It definitely knocks the wind out of you when you see a guy who worked as hard as he has and has to miss a whole year.”

All is not well with Texas on the injury front either as it lost second baseman Rougned Odor to a left hamstring pull in the first inning. The Rangers said Odor aggravated an injury from Thursday in Oakland when he tweaked the hamstring stretching for a throw at second base.

Odor’s injury will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.buccaneers_005

Lions won’t close door on Abdullah despite addition of Blount

The rave reviews continue to come in for LeGarrette Blount, the Detroit Lions’ newest running back. But the team’s brass, namely general manager Bob Quinn, isn’t closing the door on continued contributions from last year’s starter, Ameer Abdullah.

My first year, Ameer had the injury, so he really didn’t do much, Quinn said. Last year he was still kind of working through it, got back and we felt he was 100 percent. You can ask Ameer, he didn’t have a good enough year in terms of anyone’s expectations, his own, or mine or the team. I think I’ve got big hopes for him this season, that he comes back, and has a great offseason and is ready to roll.

A second-round pick in 2015 by the team’s previous front office, Abdullah is one of 10 Martin Mayhew draft selections remaining on the roster. The 5-foot-9, 203-pound ball carrier showed early signs of a breakout in 2016, Quinn’s first season at the helm, popping off for 101 yards on his first 18 carries before suffering a season-ending foot injury in the first half of the second game.

Lions coach Matt Patricia, who spent parts of four seasons with Blount in New England, knows exactly the kind of guy the Lions are getting in Blount. Despite being on opposite sides of the ball, the two cultivated a strong relationship off the field, and that bond helped lure the player to Detroit this offseason.

Patricia said Blount will bring culture, personality and toughness to the Lions.

He’s just a great person to be around, Patricia said. From that standpoint, it’s a long hard season, it’s a grind, so it’s always good to have that guy that can walk in the building and make everybody pick back up for a second or two before you get back to work. He’s great about all that stuff.

On the field, all the things he brings kind of speak for themselves. He’s a guy that’s extremely hard to tackle. He’s a large man coming downhill, very fast, but he also has the ability to get outside and get to the edge. Now, if you can get him in those situations, it’s a whole different level of problem.

The Lions could have used Blount’s skill set the past two years, when he was a free agent each offseason. Quinn, who was also intimately familiar with Blount having worked in New England front office when the back was initially acquired in a trade, said the Lions made an effort to sign him last offseason, but implied a lack of mutual interest.nike_broncos_057-500x500

Good things come to those who wait.

That might be the Giants’ mantra if they are able to land free agent punter Marquette King, who was released Friday by the Raiders.

He is known for dressing up in outlandish costumes and trying trick punt shots, for punt celebrations a la touchdown celebrations, and for being outspoken on Twitter as seen in this quote Tweet backing oft-criticized Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. from December:

King, 29, showed up at the Raiders’ facility Friday to meet some of the new coaches and was released by general manager Reggie McKenzie before he had the chance, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

One of the Giants’ main competitors for King — or any desirable available veteran punter — will be the rival Super Bowl champion Eagles, who are searching for the retired Donnie Jones’ replacement.

The Giants could wait until the NFL Draft to fill Wing’s spot on the cheap. There were seven punters invited to the NFL Combine and undrafted punters find a home in the league every year.

Rutgers product Ryan Anderson, who had a strong Pro Day, will be at the Giants’ local day.

Boone replaced him with righty Chad Green after Severino struck out Justin Smoak looking with Josh Donaldson on first base via walk. Green fanned Curtis Granderson to end the inning.

Severino touched 100 mph in the first and fourth innings. By the sixth, he was still reaching 98 mph.

Closer Aroldis Chapman pitched a clean ninth inning.

The Houston Texans announced Thursday they signed the free-agent quarterback, who last played for the franchise in 2015. That’s also the last time he appeared in an NFL game.

The former first-rounder isn’t expected to see much action in his second stint with the Texans, but his role could be important nonetheless. After working for four different franchises, the 34-year-old veteran will serve as another set of eyes, and possibly insurance, for wunderkind Deshaun Watson.patriots_089-223x223

Yankees get 2nd straight bullpen breakdown, lose to Blue Jays

David Robertson let his shoulders sink and arms fall and he looked like he wanted to faint.

It was Aaron Boone’s first major backfire, and it cost the Yankees dearly.

Boone will likely have a hard time sleeping before Monday’s home-opener, questioning over and over whether he should have intentionally walked Josh Donaldson to load the bases for Justin Smoak, whose two-out, full-count grand slam downed the Yankees, 7-4, on Sunday.

He had a 5.12-second 40-yard dash and a 4.67-second short shuttle, both of which are excellent times for a man his size. I felt today went well, Mailata told NFL. com. This was my first chance to go through the positional drills in front of teams and I hope they got a chance to see the progress I have made as I try to master the position. Mailata has been working with the same coach who prepared the German wide receiver Moritz Bohringer for his NFL workouts before the Vikings chose Bohringer in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Bohringer didn’t pan out and is currently out of the league, and that experience may make NFL teams more likely to sign Mailata as an undrafted free agent than spend a draft pick on him. But Mailata is a name to keep an eye on after the draft, when he may get some calls who think he has the raw talent to make an impact, once he learns the sport.

The Eagles got more immediate drama with the Michael Bennett trade than they bargained for, but they knew they weren’t acquiring a shrinking violet. By Packers standards, signing Muhammad Wilkerson and Jimmy Graham while letting popular receiver Jordy Nelson walk was like betting the mortgage on a roulette spin. The Eagles are doubling down on the aggressiveness that made them champions, and the new Packers braintrust realizes the team needs to work outside of its comfort zone to avoid peaking at 10 wins every year.

Elsewhere in the standings, the 49ers happily gobbled up Sherman and some other premium talent from teams that were looking down at them in pity a year ago. The Browns have acquired several starters who got caught in culture clashes elsewhere (Taylor, Landry, Damarious Randall) at affordable prices.patriots_151-223x223

Why did the Chargers sign Geno Smith

This offseason, most free agent quarterbacks found new teams quickly. But even as Brock Osweiler and Blaine Gabbert inked new deals, Geno Smith ’s remained unsigned — until now. On Sunday, Smith signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a one-year deal for Smith.

They’ve still got Davis Webb on the roster, and the Giants hold the No. 2 overall pick. They could draft one of this year’s top quarterback prospects to groom as Eli Manning’s replacement.

Was this a smart move from the Chargers

Los Angeles traded for Cardale Jones last year and the team doesn’t seem that impressed with him. In the preseason, Jones threw three interceptions with no touchdowns, while Kellen Clemens is also a free agent.

On top of that, Smith is a more physical quarterback and it likely a better fit for Anthony Lynn’s offense. Going from backing up Manning to backing up Rivers is a lateral move for Smith at worst, but going from Jones to Smith just seems like a smart move for the Chargers.

That said, the backup quarterback hasn’t had too much to do with the Chargers in recent years. Rivers has played in all 16 regular season games for the past 12 seasons.

Rebuilding, retooling, reassessing. Whatever.

Just know this: Rookie coach Frank Reich is having none of it.

Even while his team’s general manager and owner are espousing the idea of rebuilding the roster and asking fans for patience through the process, Reich hit a much different note during the NFL’s annual meeting.

You’re talking about a guy who is the ultimate competitor, who, as a player, stared down and overcame two of the biggest deficits in the history of the pro and college games.

You think Reich was focusing on next year when his Bills were down 35-3 in the third quarter against the Oilers in that legendary 1993 comeback he authored Don’t let the nice-guy demeanor and his history as a minister fool you. Reich wants to win. And he wants it more than you probabljets_058

Few wideouts who work as far downfield as Lee do more after the catch.

Discussions of the Braves’ excellence in the’90s and early 2000s inevitably end with a lament about the team only winning one World Series title in 14 tries, its unprecedented run of division titles usually taking a back seat to the perplexing thought that a team stacked with Hall of Famers could so consistently fall short in the postseason.

WR Marqise Lee, Jaguars Grade: C+ The former USC product was drafted ahead of Jaguars teammate Allen Robinson, but Robinson and undrafted free agent Allen Hurns moved ahead of Lee on the depth chart.

He looked like a wasted pick by 2016, but the second-rounder took advantage of an injury to Hurns to re-emerge as a useful possession receiver for Blake Bortles.

Lee moved back into the starting lineup in 2017 and kept up his level of play, only to be slowed by a pair of high ankle sprains at the beginning and end of the season.

Twelve starting receivers averaged more than 5 yards after the catch over the past two years, and of those 12, only Julio Jones and Tyrell Williams caught their average pass farther downfield than Lee.

Having torn his ACL in 2013 and in 2014, Bradford began experiencing problems once again after he led Minnesota to victory in the 2017 season-opener against New Orleans. He missed the next three games before retuning in what proved the saddest Monday night quarterbacking performance for the Vikings since Josh Freeman was thrown to the wolves without knowing the playbook in 2013.

No NFL player I’ve covered in 23 seasons has ever looked like he wanted to stay on the field less than the pain-riddled Bradford did against Chicago at Soldier Field.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who never should have put or kept Bradford out there in the first place, mercifully switched to Case Keenum just before halftime. Bradford was finally cleared to resume playing in January following a clean-up surgery, but Minnesota understandably kept him benched after Keenum thrived while leading the team into the playoffs as the NFC’s No. 2 seed.ravens_147

Kyle Shanahan on addition of Jerick McKinnon: “He’s an issue for teams”

The San Francisco 49ers paid a premium to get running back Jerick McKinnon under contract, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is extremely excited about the various ways he can deploy McKinnon in the 49ers’ offense.

While McKinnon is a successful rusher, it’s what he brings to the passing attack that has Shanahan particularly excited. “What is a huge bonus on him is when you talk about the pass game,” Shanahan said. “When it comes to separating and beating linebackers and safeties in man-to-man coverage, I definitely think he’s an issue for teams. I think this league, when it comes to third downs and things like that, you move the chains based off of matchups, which allows you to get points in the long run.”

Santos, born in S?o Paulo, Brazil, was unfamiliar with American football until he came to St. Augustine, FL, as a foreign exchange student. He took to placekicking at St. Joseph Academy and then at Tulane, and became the first Brazilian to play in the NFL when he entered the league an undrafted free agent with Kansas City in 2014.

In his first three seasons with the Chiefs, Santos (5’8″, 160) converted 86 of 102 field goal attempts (84.3%), including 7-of-12 from 50-plus yards, and 113 of 118 extra points (95.8%).

If there’s a flaw with the program, it’s that it doesn’t address the why behind the Braves only winning one World Series. With so much talent, peaking at the same time, all under the guidance of a Hall of Fame manager and general manager, those teams continue to boggle the minds of many as to why Atlanta underachieved so often. It would’ve been interesting to hear the players’ theories behind the shortcomings, though Tuminaro said they offered no big revelations during interviews.

But it’s all (for) the good of the team. I want to win so much that, yeah, sometimes I’m gonna get pissed off.” Peters continued : “I just don’t like when motherf- — oh, excuse my language — I don’t like when motherf—–s talk about me and they say they got off-the-field issues because, I mean, I could be sitting here and I could be getting DUIs and I could be doing all the rest of the stuff, I could be arrested and I could have a mug shot, and I don’t got that burden on me.” Peters isn’t wrong.ravens_068

Raiders sign Tahir Whitehead to reported 3-year deal

The Oakland Raiders have signed free-agent linebacker Tahir Whitehead, the team announced Thursday. The deal is a three-year contract worth more than $6 million annually, a source told Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review Journal. Whitehead, 27, gives the Raiders some much-needed help in the middle of their defense, particularly against the run. The former Detroit Lions starter notched at least 110 tackles in each of his last two seasons, adding an interception and a sack in 2017. The six-year pro had spent his entire career with the Lions.

More: Cincinnati Bengals, Tyler Eifert head down boom or bust path once more

He afforded the club an opportunity to match the Rams’ offer that could push the deal to about $8.5 million should he hit all of his performance incentives.

“I felt like I owed that to the organization, to Mr. Brown, to coach Lewis and to the fans, especially the way the first five years of my career have gone; up and down,” Eifert said. “I felt like (I had to) to keep them in the loop. I knew that’s where I wanted to be, so I’m happy about that.”

The Bears and Eagles both gave up significant draft assets to acquire their franchise quarterbacks, and in both cases, critics believed the teams would struggle to surround those pivots with a strong supporting cast due to a lack of resources. Yet, having a rookie quarterback who could essentially start from Day 1 has given both rebuilding clubs much more financial freedom. Here’s Trubisky’s rookie contract, which – thanks to the wage scale – is almost identical to Wentz’s in terms of yearly cap hits, via Spotrac.

Another big move not to be overlooked was signing Cody Parkey, who made 91.3 percent of his field goal attempts last season with Miami. Kicking has been a major issue for Chicago since they let Robbie Gould go after the 2015 season.

The Bears also retained Prince Amukamara and Sam Acho on defense and then signed Chase Daniel to be their backup quarterback. 3) Los Angeles Rams The Los Angeles Rams may have lost Trumaine Johnson in free agency, but you can’t say they their secondary isn’t looking good. The Rams made two of the most notable trades this offseason by acquiring cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. Talib was acquired for a fifth-round pick and remains one of the better corners in the league. He’ll be reunited with former Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.canucks_001
