The Braves’ appreciation of a lengthy stretch in Atlanta is nothing compared with the New York Mets’ thankfulness about hitting the road, though.

The Mets, who begin a two-game series at SunTrust Park on Tuesday night, had lost 10 straight at home before snapping their eight-game overall losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday night.

The Mets (28-34) have been in a free fall since starting the season 11-1 and hope to get things back on track away from the pressures of New York during a 10-game road trip.

I think we’re a lot better team than how we’re playing, said Zack Wheeler, who will start the series opener against fellow right-hander Mike Foltynewicz of the Braves. I’ve said that before and I’ll keep saying it.

Wheeler (2-4, 4.57) allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings against Baltimore on Wednesday in New York, but he got a Ersan Ilyasova Jersey no-decision in the loss.

Since the interrupted first series, the Nationals (36-27) are 12-9 in their last 21 games and the Yankees (42-19) are 16-7 in their last 23.

Both teams are coming off 2-0 losses.

Harper leads the National League with 19 homers and is hitting .188 (6-for-32) with one homer and three RBI in his last eight games. He went 0-for-4 in Sunday’s 2-0 home loss to the San Francisco Giants when the Nationals mustered three hits in a game started by Max Scherzer.

Today, it just kind of didn’t click all the way through, Washington shortstop Trea Turner told reporters. I think it’s a little bit of a coincidence, but when you get traffic on the bases, that helps get better pitches to hit, puts more pressure on them. Hopefully, we can do that to the Yankees on Tuesday.

Cardinals: RHP Jack Flaherty (2-2), Monday’s starter against San Diego, allowed a career-high eight hits and six runs in his last start on June 6 against Miami.

Tom Brady: I’m still playing because I haven’t hit 1,000 career rushing yards

Brady, who turns 41 in August, will play in his 19th season with New England, but he still has at least one goal left.

“Ok so the main reason I’m still playing is I haven’t hit 1,000 career rushing yards yet… 32 to go!” Brady wrote on Instagram. He also posted a video showing him working on his rushing skills, running on the beach with a resistance band as a partner pulls him back.

The story wasn’t just that the Cavs were embarrassed on the court after wearing the suits but also that the cut of the suits was criticized up and down. The pants, dubbed “high trousers” by Browne, fall to just above the ankle, and that led to shots such as “Did they run out of material?” and “Where’s the flood?” on social media.

Part of James’ and Browne’s shared vision was to push the envelope a bit, however.

While the team remains optimistic about the outcome, the Cowboys will prepare for the upcoming season as if they won’t have Gregory on the roster.

“He’s being very diligent in preparing his information and preparing his application,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week at the team’s annual tournament at Cowboys Golf Club. “I have been proud of Randy during this offseason. I’m very aware of how hard he’s working to get back in the league and get back on the field.”

Gregory, 25, has 20 tackles and one sack in 14 games with Dallas.

“It’s always hard staying in it, staying in the moment when you’re practicing away from the team and away from us a little bit. But we’ve done a really good job at keeping these guys with the group and skating with us at pregame skates and practices and stuff,” said center Jay Beagle.ravens_008

John Dorsey: Chubb and Ward graded equally on Browns board

The reason so many people were stunned when the Browns took cornerback Denzel Ward instead of defensive end Bradley Chubb with the fourth overall pick is that the consensus view was the Chubb was the better player.

“He’s got the long vertical speed, he’s got sudden-area explosive quickness that you like in those types of players, he’s got great ball skills. And I see his ceiling of growth, I see it as really high. You know when you get players from Ohio State University, you know you’re going to get guys that really like to play the game.”

That last little bit of pandering to the home crowd aside, what else is Dorsey going to say? After taking a player that flew in the face of what most people thought about the draft, he has to justify it back home. It’s impossible to know if anyone shared that view, because Broncos boss John Elway turned down chances to trade down so he could take Chubb, stopping a fall that lasted longer than anyone imagined.

“I think you’re always looking for bigger targets,” McCarthy said, via the team’s website. “It makes sense, doesn’t it? Bigger catching radius, completion percentage. I think any quarterback would prefer to throw to a bigger target.”

We know Aaron Rodgers had a preference for throwing to Nelson when he was in Green Bay. It would be a lot to expect any rookie to come close to replicating that relationship, but any early sparks should lead to a leg up in the competition for playing time.

The NFL draft was on network television for the first time ever, and that made the difference as it became the most-watched draft ever.

The league announced today that the draft had an average of 5.5 million viewers at any given time, the highest viewership total ever for the full draft. The first round of the draft averaged 11.2 million viewers on Thursday night. Draft viewership declines on the second and third days, but Saturday’s average of 2.9 million viewers was the best Day 3 ever.broncos_063_c3e369b6225c27d0-180x180

A closer look at the projected AFC win totals

The oddsmakers have set the over-under numbers for the wins for all teams. We spent some time during Tuesday’s PFT Live looking at the nooks and crannies of the projected AFC win totals.

The ensuing discussion didn’t suck, which some may say would be a low bar in relation to our normal content. Regardless, it’s worth your time to see the numbers and to hear our seat-of-the-pants analysis of the numbers, along with our effort to find the best bets among the bunch.

That’s the guy you want working with Andrew Luck.

Reich brings a new mentality to an environment that seemed to have become stale and gloomy. You’re allowed to be an excited Colts fan again.

The Buffalo Bills believe they’ve found their future franchise quarterback in Josh Allen, but it took a lot of maneuvering for them to position themselves to draft him. Buffalo traded up five spots on draft night, but the No. 12 selection that went the other way in a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers originally belonged to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Barrett had a redshirt season in 2013 and took over as the Buckeyes’ starter the next year after an injury to Braxton Miller, who now plays wide receiver for the Texans. An injury late that season brought Cardale Jones, currently with the Chargers, into the mix, but Barrett returned to the lineup before the 2015 season was out and remained there tbroncos_129_3d6b7eb78b9eb98d-180x180he last two years.

Tom Savage and Taysom Hill are the backup options already on hand in New Orleans.

With that in mind, it made sense to pay up for a talented young receiver like Robinson, who is coming off a torn ACL but is a year removed from a two-season stretch in which he caught 153 passes for 2,283 yards and 20 touchdowns.

That was in the Jacksonville Jaguars offense, pre-Leonard Fournette and before Blake Bortles was half-decent.

With Trubisky, fellow newbie pass-catchers Taylor Gabriel and Trey Burton, a top-notch running game and a solid offensive line, the 24-year-old 2014 second-round pick should explode if healthy in 2018.

Report: Patriots G Joe Thuney to undergo foot surgery

Tom Brady ‘s offensive line is dealing with another issue this offseason.

Left guard Joe Thuney is preparing for upcoming foot surgery, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Thursday.

Thuney’s surgery isn’t expected to threaten his availability when the season opens in September, but getting cut open is rarely a positive.

Mack didn’t play well enough last year (3.8 yards per carry, four drops on 33 targets) for Frank Reich to simply hand him the starting job, but I think his play-making ability (six carries of 20-plus yards last season) gives him a leg up on his backfield competition. If you had asked me this question 24 hours ago, Christian McCaffrey probably would have been my top choice.

McCaffrey was a PPR monster last year—his 80 catches were third-most among running backs—and he appeared to be poised for a full workload following Jonathan Stewart ’s release. But the Panthers altered their backfield equation Monday by signing Broncos cast-off C.J. Anderson, who is coming off his first 1,000-yard rushing season. I imagine McCaffrey’s role will be similar to the one he had last year, which means he’ll still offer plenty of appeal in PPR formats.

It was Sunday, and (Monday) he came here, got treatment, threw a little bit, Cora said. We decided it was better for him to go back to Boston, check it out and go from there.

Price did not undergo any tests following the first round of numbness in his hand, partially because of the cold weather on that April night.

Everybody thought, everybody agreed that it was just something that happened that night, Cora said. We actually felt it was something that wasn’t going to happen. It was just a one-day thing. Obviously with the weather, we talked about it, and we thought that it wasn’t going to happen again.

Coaches, GMs believe Browns will take Baker Mayfield with No. 1 pick

The Browns continue to keep the decision about their No. 1 pick a secret, but there is a mounting belief from head coaches and general managers around the NFL that Cleveland will take quarterback Baker Mayfield, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday.

The Browns hold the No. 1 and No. 4 overall picks in the draft, which begins Thursday at 8 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Before the first round gets underway Thursday night, Todd McShay gives his final first-round predictions for all 32 picks. Which player will your favorite team take?

Mayfield, who is from Austin, Texas, transferred from Texas Tech to Oklahoma after his freshman season. During his college career, he threw for 14,607 yards and had 131 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions. He also rushed for 21 TDs and caught another during his college career.

The Diamondbacks took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Paul Goldschmidt’s leadoff flare over first base landed just inside the foul line. Pollack then belted a triple off the wall in right-center and scored on Daniel Descalso’s sacrifice fly.

Pollack homered to lead off the second, then singled and scored on Descalso’s double in the fourth.

Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Nationals.

INF Mark Reynolds’ minor league contract with Washington includes a $1.5 million base salary if he is added to the 40-man roster. He could earn $2 million in performances bonuses based on plate appearances: $250,000 for 200, and an additional $250,000 for each additional 40 through 480.

Diamondbacks: RHP Shelby Miller threw 25 pitches of live batting practice as he continues his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. He last pitched April 23, 2017. “He said he felt fantastic,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “That was really encouraging.”. 3B Jake Lamb (left shoulder sprain) has thrown on consecutive days. . Lovullo said RHP Randall Delgado (oblique strain) threw at 90 feet and felt good.dolphins_005

Irish offensive linemen Quenton Nelson, Mike McGlinchey drafted in top 10

Two Notre Dame offensive linemen were taken in the top 10 picks of the NFL draft Thursday.

Offensive guard Quenton Nelson went to the Indianapolis Colts at No. 6, and offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey went to the San Francisco 49ers at No. 9.

This is the first time since 1993, when Rick Mirer went at No. 2 and Jerome Bettis went at No. 10, that Notre Dame had two players selected in the top 10.

McGlinchey is a first cousin of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and said he heard about 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan from Ryan. Shanahan was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator before being named head coach of the 49ers.

“My cousin Matt said nothing but great things about Kyle, and I’m excited to get to work with him,” said McGlinchey, who was a two-time captain of the Irish team. Kelly also praised McGlinchey on Twitter.

Budenholzer had two years and more than $14 million left on his contract, with the Hawks headed into a full rebuilding process.

Atlanta owner Tony Ressler and general manager Travis Schlenk met Budenholzer on Tuesday night in Atlanta and ultimately decided that a separation was the best course for everyone, league sources said.

The Hawks gave Budenholzer permission to speak with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks for their coaching openings last week. Budenholzer interviewed with the Knicks on Sunday, and he remains a candidate for the job, league sources said. He pulled out of contention for the Suns’ job after several conversations with ownership and management.

Atlanta is interested in pursuing a young coach on the rise to evolve with the rebuilding of its roster. Atlanta has three first-round picks in the June NBA draft and the No. 33 overall pick early in the second round. Atlanta also owns Cleveland’s 2019 first-round pick, which is top-10 protected.

Candidates the Hawks are expected to consider to replace Budenholzer include Charlotte Hornets assistant Stephen Silas, Portland Trail Blazers assistants Nate Tibbetts and David Vanterpool, and San Antonio Spurs assistants Ime Udoka and James Borrego.sl_cardinals_047

NFL cheerleaders will settle for $1 in exchange for meeting with Roger Goodell

If NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have a meeting with a group of cheerleaders, the two former cheerleaders who recently filed discrimination claims will settle those claims for $1 each.

The settlement proposal by Sara Blackwell, the lawyer representing the cheerleaders, asked that Goodell and league lawyers have a “good faith” meeting with at least four cheerleaders to create binding rules and regulations for all NFL teams. Also, teams that currently have cheerleading squads would not be allowed to disband them as retaliation for at least five years.

After two batters reached in the first inning, Tillman retired 10 straight before allowing a four-pitch walk to Victor Martinez with two outs in the fourth. He did not allow a hit until Jose Iglesias lined a one-out double in the fifth.

Ole Miss refutes those claims, and thus objects to the players’ request to waive the NCAA’s normal transfer rules. Patterson’s attorney, Thomas Mars, said he remains optimistic that the NCAA will allow Patterson to play this fall, but does not know when a final decision might come.

Patterson announced his plans to transfer to Michigan less than two weeks after the additional sanctions were levied against Ole Miss. Michigan submitted paperwork for the waiver request in late February.

The league’s investigation included formal reviews and reports from every team that interviewed Guice, as well as interviews with the player, his agent and others, per a source. The league could not confirm that any club made the reported inquiries.

The league spent weeks trying to figure out who had asked Guice these questions. At least one team said Guice admitted that he “made up” the statements that led to a lengthy NFL investigation, according to a source.

What’s acceptable has evolved from the early days of hockey through Scott Stevens’ then-legal crushing blow on Eric Lindros in 2000 to today, when checks to the head are parsed frame by frame to determine if they are illegal. The NHL, too, is still facing a federal class-action concussion lawsuit filed by former players alleging it failed to warn them about the health risks associated with head injuries.sl_cardinals_004

Jon Gruden runs first NFL practice in almost 10 years with Raiders

Jon Gruden yelled out instructions, called out plays and ran an NFL practice for the first time since leaving coaching nearly a decade ago in Tampa Bay.

This was the day Gruden had been waiting for ever since he was hired for a second stint as Oakland Raiders coach.

The Raiders opened their first voluntary minicamp under Gruden on Tuesday with optimism that a change in coach can alter the fortunes of a team coming off a down season.

“He threw everything at me,” Carr said. “He tried to get me to see if I was listening to him in the meetings. We had a lot of fun doing that. It’s always fun to accept his challenge and hopefully do good at it and look at him or wink at him or something like that. We have fun together because we both have the same goal of putting the ship in the water and hitting this thing running.”

Gruden takes over a team that fell from 12 wins in 2016 to just six last season, leading to the firing of coach Jack Del Rio and a second stint for Gruden in Oakland. The Raiders’ facility looks far different than it did during Gruden’s first tenure from 1998 to 2001 thanks to a workout center that Del Rio initiated and new fields.

The team needs plenty of work after last year’s disappointment.

“I got pretty lucky,” Williamson said. “I felt fine then and I feel fine now. I’m sure once the adrenalin wears off later tonight, tomorrow we’ll see how the body feels. I’m sure I’ll be a little sore.”

Brandon Belt hit his fifth home run in six games, Joe Panik added three hits and scored twice, and the Giants won their third straight and fourth in the last five.

One night after hitting a 464-foot homer in the series opener, Williamson hit a first-pitch solo shot to center off Roark with two outs in the sixth inning that bounced off the top of the wall and broke a 3-all tie. It wasn’t as far as Monday’s clout — this one went 423 feet — but was just as pivotal for the Giants.

“We’ve talked about what a shot in the arm he’s been and he’s more than that,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He came through again tonight. Good for him because he’s worked hard at it.”

Williamson’s deciding home run came one inning after he stumbled over the bullpen mound in foul territory and crashed into a low wall near the stands while trying to chase down Bryce Harper’s foul ball. Williamson stayed down briefly as team trainers rushed out before getting to his feet.jets_052
