Coaches, GMs believe Browns will take Baker Mayfield with No. 1 pick

The Browns continue to keep the decision about their No. 1 pick a secret, but there is a mounting belief from head coaches and general managers around the NFL that Cleveland will take quarterback Baker Mayfield, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday.

The Browns hold the No. 1 and No. 4 overall picks in the draft, which begins Thursday at 8 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mayfield, who is from Austin, Texas, transferred from Texas Tech to Oklahoma after his freshman season. During his college career, he threw for 14,607 yards and had 131 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions. He also rushed for 21 TDs and caught another during his college career.

The Diamondbacks took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Paul Goldschmidt’s leadoff flare over first base landed just inside the foul line. Pollack then belted a triple off the wall in right-center and scored on Daniel Descalso’s sacrifice fly.

Pollack homered to lead off the second, then singled and scored on Descalso’s double in the fourth.

Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Nationals.

INF Mark Reynolds’ minor league contract with Washington includes a $1.5 million base salary if he is added to the 40-man roster. He could earn $2 million in performances bonuses based on plate appearances: $250,000 for 200, and an additional $250,000 for each additional 40 through 480.
